Abstract

Irinotec an is a drug used for th e treatment of cancer. Irinotecan is a topoisomerase 1 inhibitor, whic h prevents DNA from u nwinding. In chemical t erms, it is a semisynthetic analogue of the natur al alkaloid campto thecin.Its m ain use is in colon cancer, in particular, in combination with other chemotherapy agen ts. This includes the regimen FOLFIRI, which consists of i nfusional 5- fluorouracil, leucovorin, and irino tecan.Irinotecan was approved by t he U.S. Foo d and Drug Administration (FDA) i 1994. During deve lopment, it was known as CPT-11.
